Duke of My Heart by Kelly Bowen

Duke of My Heart by Kelly Bowen

This is book 1 in the Season for Scandal series.

Captain Maximus Harcourt can't believe that he came back from sea only to find his sister missing and a dead man in her bed. What more can go wrong?

Miss Ivory Moore is a "fixer". She knows how to deal with those problems that pop up among the aristocracy. But Max doesn't her help, but soon realizes that she has contacts that he doesn't and she is needed to find his missing sister.

Neither counted on their mutual attraction. Can they fight it long enough to find Max's sister, or does fate have other plans.

I loved this opening book of Bowen's newest series! I really liked Max, but it was Ivory that made this book for me. She was just so different from the heroines in most of the books I read. I love Scandal and Ivory was the Regency period's Olivia Pope!!

If this is any indication of how the rest of the series will be, I can't wait to read the rest of it!! I looks like the next book in the series will be out sometime in July.

Sweetest Scoundrel by Elizabeth Hoyt

Sweetest Scoundrel by Elizabeth Hoyt

This is book 9 in the Maiden Lane series.

Eve Dinwoody is monitoring the financing of the reopening of Harte's Folly for her brother. When she meets the owner of the pleasure garden for the first time, she is less than impressed. She soon finds herself butting heads with the infuriating man and to her surprise, wildly attracted to him.

Asa Makepeace doesn't need another person to deal with while trying to re-open Harte's Folly, especially an interfering aristocratic woman. But the more time he spends with Eve, finds Asa trying to deny the attraction between the two of them.

Can this unlikely pair make a go of it?

I've not really like Asa throughout this series, so I was wondering how Hoyt would change my mind about him when his story came around because you've got to like the hero of the story!!

She definitely made me see Asa in a different light than what was previously shown in the series. I ended up really liking him. I think his interactions with Eve brought out the true Asa that was hidden behind a hurt young man (not to get into too many details, don't want to ruin the story for you!).

I loved Eve too. She was a generally a timid person, but when she butted heads with Asa I think that the real her truly came out. She had a job to do and wasn't going to let anyone or anything get in her way.

Of course, if you've read the previous stories in the series, you know that the opening of the pleasure gardens is not going to go smoothly…nothing about the project has. Which of course means many problems to solve along the way.

The next book in the series, Duke of Sin, is about Eve's brother the Duke of Montgomery. He is not really a very nice guy….Hoyt has a lot of work to do to convience me that he deserves his HEA, but I know I won't be disappointed!!! It comes out in May 2016.

When Edward Westover, Duke of Swarthmore, decided to ruin the man that killed his brother, he never imagined that he would become ward to the man's daughter. Expecting a young child, Edward is surprised to find an independent, young woman that wants nothing to do with him.

Kate Benton can't believe that her father made her the ward of the duke. She is a grown woman and doesn't need anyone looking after her. Soon Kate vows to do anything in her power to get Edward to leave. But once the two of them start spending time together, they see that there is much more to the other than they each had previously thought.

After years of her father breaking her heart, can Kate trust Edward not to do the same?

One Wild Winter's Eve by Anne Barton

One Wild Winter's Eve by Anne Barton

This is book 4 in the Honeycote series.

Lady Rose Sherbour was rendered mute after seeing a traumatizing event as a young girl. But that didn't stop her from having a wonderful summer with the stable boy. They were able to communicate without words. Even though they were very young, she could sense the connection between them even then. But he just disappeared one day and Rose has no idea what had become of him. Now speaking again and moving about in society, Rose runs into her stable boy at a most unexpected place.

Charles Holland never imagined that he would see Lady Rose again. When she shows up to stay at the home of his employer, he realizes that his feelings for her haven't changed in all the years they have been apart. When Rose asks him to help find information about her mother, Charles can't refuse.

Will the difference in their stations keep this unlikely couple apart?

Once again Barton put together a wonderful story! It's not often that we see a story where the H/H have such class difference. But once again, Barton was able to pull it off. I always love her stories because they always contain some mystery in which the H/H need to solve. That just enhances the story as it puts them into situations in which they normally wouldn't have found themselves in.

I've loved this series, but I think this is the last one....so sad!! I can't wait to see what she has in store for us next!!

To Desire A Highlander by Sue-Ellen Welfonder

To Desire A Highlander by Sue-Ellen Welfonder

This is book 2 in the Scandalous Scots series.

Lady Gillian MacGuire is dreading the return of her betrothed. Promised to Donell MacDonnell five years ago, she is hoping that she can talk him into releasing her from the betrothal when he returns.  But when she is finally face to face with Donell, he doesn't seem to be the same man. Where the Donell of five years ago repulsed her, this feels nothing but attraction for the Donell before her now.

Roag the Bear has taken on the identity of the deceased Donell MacDonnell because of a mission for the Fenris Guard. He didn't know that the man had a fiance waiting for his return. But after one kiss, Roag is smitten and not ready to give up Gillian.

What will happen when the truth about his identity is revealed?

I really enjoyed this book. I was intrigued by Roag after reading To Love a Highlander and I was not disappointed by Welfonder's story for him.

Roag had gone undercover many times for the Fenris, but this time was different. He knew that he had a job to do, but because of the way he came to feel for Gillian, he had a hard time justifying his lying to her. It was interesting reading his back in forth with himself. He wanted to reveal the truth to Gillian, but he wasn't allowed to reveal his mission to anyone outside the Fenris group.

Gillian had to be a strong woman to survive growing up with so many brothers. I think her upbringing helped her to be the perfect match for Roag. She knew upon meeting Roag that he wasn't who he said he was and she didn't stay quiet about it.

I can't wait to read the rest of the stories about the members of the Fenris Guard!

You're the Earl That I Want by Kelly Bowen

You're the Earl That I Want by Kelly Bowen

This is book 3 in the Lords of Worth series.

Heath Hextall, the Earl of Boden, has decided it is time to get married. With the scandals that have followed his family, he decides he needs an even-tempered wife that can take care of his household and bring some respectability to his family. His best friend, the Duke of Worth, finds the perfect candidate whom Heath immediately starts to court.

Lady Josephine (Joss) Somerhall, the Duke of Worth's sister, is back in town after traveling the world for many years. Having known Joss as a little girl, Heath is intrigued by the woman she has become. They are completely wrong for each other (Joss doesn't want the restraint a marriage would put on her and she definitely is not the even-tempered wife that Heath is looking for), but they can't seem to fight the attraction that sizzles between them whenever they are in the same room together.

Will marriage to each other allow Joss the freedom she wants and give Heath the respectability he desires?

LOVED this story!! Joss was a refreshing heroine that didn't follow society's dictates and Heath was not your typical lord.

Joss was the perfect woman to match a man with a title to wasn't meant to be his. A respectable gentleman of the ton would have squashed Joss's personality and she would have been miserable (hence her desire not to get married!) Heath thought he wanted a nice, biddable wife that would bring him the respect that he thought he should receive now that he had the title. He thought that it would wash away the taint of being a merchant. They soon realize that they need each other for more than their attraction to one another.

I hope that Bowen is not done with this series, as I have found that it is one of my favorites to date!

Devil's Moon by Amanda Scott

Devil's Moon by Amanda Scott

This is book 2 in the Border Nights series.

After the deaths of her parents and older brother, Lady Robina Gledstanes has had to be "Laird of the Manor" until her brother comes of age that is until her elder brother's best friend steps in to take over.

Sir David Orminston promised his best friend on his death bed to take care of his brother and sister.  When trouble knocks on their door, he soon realizes that he wants to take care of Robina for more reasons than that promise to her brother.

Robina is not ready to submit to any man, but her feelings for David make her doubt her decision.

As I've stated before, I love reading Scott's stories because they are so full of history and this story is no exception. Scott brings to life what it was like to live on the border between Scotland and England and the perils that it brought.

David has known Robina for many years, but he is just now seeing her as a woman instead of his friend's sister. Robina must also change that way she sees David after all these years.  They are both confused by their feelings and must learn how to deal with them.

Another masterpiece by Scott and I can't wait to see what she comes up with next.

What a Devilish Duke Desires by Vicky Dreiling

What a Devilish Duke Desires by Vicky Dreiling

This is book 3 in the Sinful Scoundrels series.

Harry Norcliffe never wanted his uncles title. He was not raised among the peerage and is not your typical Duke. When he meets Lucy, he doesn't tell her that he is a Duke right away. She works among the ton, but has no idea who he really is. He enjoys spending time with her, because he knows she is not after something from him other than his friendship.

Lucy is just trying to make ends meet for her grandmother and herself. Her dream is to open her own dance studio to train you debutants how to dance.  Having been let go from her seamstress job, and working for a tyrannical dance instructor, Lucy welcomes the opportunity to branch out on her own. A chance meeting introduces her to Harry.

Thinking him a well to do businessman, she befriends him needing someone to talk to during her troubling times.
What happens when Lucy finds out that not only is Harry a member of the peerage, but a Duke? Their two worlds soon collide and mischief ensues. Can their budding romance survive?

I really enjoyed Harry and Lucy's story. I've always enjoyed stories in which members of the peerage don't act like they are better than everyone else. Having not grown up with a title, Harry hates all the attention that comes with being a Duke. He desperately misses his uncle that he inherited the title from and feels like it shouldn't even be his. He is intrigued by Lucy for what she isn't, a young debutant looking to marry a title.

Lucy has been educated like a young society miss because her mother was from the peerage. But having married beneath her, her family disowned her. After Lucy's mother and then father passed away, she didn't have anyone to rely on but herself. Taking care of her blind grandmother became another job in of itself, although she never begrudged her for it. Meeting Harry took some of the load off of her mind, not because her life became easier, but because she had someone to talk to about it.

Another great read by Dreiling!! I can't wait to see what she comes up with next!

Scandalous Summer Nights by Anne Barton

This is book 3 in the Honeycote series.

Everyone knows that Olivia Sherbourne is in love with James Averill, but when she learns that he is going on an extended expedition to Egypt she decides she better make her move. She must declare her feelings to him before he leaves.

James has always found Olivia attractive, but what kind of gentleman would he be if he lusted after his best friend's sister?  Knowing that he must get away from Olivia before he does something stupid, he leaves for the country. He never expected Olivia to follow him.

Realizing that following James and lying to her family about her destination was wrong, Olivia decides to go ahead and travel to where her family thinks she is. James wouldn't be a gentleman if he allowed her to travel alone, and insists that he travel with her.

Can Olivia use this time to make James realize that she is his destiny?

I just love this series and this book was no exception. Olivia has known that James was her destiny and she just needed to convince him of it. I loved watching her go after her dreams. James, trying to be the gentleman, tried very hard to not fall under her spell.  It was great fun watching the back and forth between these two.

Definitely one for the keeper shelf. I can't wait to see what Barton has in store for us next!

Darling Beast by Elizabeth Hoyt

Darling Beast by Elizabeth Hoyt

This is book 7 in the Maiden Lane series.

Lily Stump, one of London's premier actresses, is down on her luck. Having left her previous employer and signing on with someone knew for more money, she thought all would be fine. She hadn't counted on the theatre burning down, not being able to find work and then having to move out of her home. She now finds herself living in the remains of the burnt theatre and living off the money that writing plays brings in.

Having escaped Bedlam, where he was placed for a crime he didn't commit, Apollo Greaves, the Viscount Kilbourne spends his days hiding from the Crown. He works on the remains of the theatre gardens trying to bring them back to life.  Because of an injury while in Bedlam, he is unable to talk. He uses this to his advantage to hide as a simpleton. He soon realizes that he didn't hide it well enough when he meets Lily and he calls him out on it.

Lily's son has taken a liking to him and the three of them end up spending lots of time together working on the garden, having picnics and just conversing. But what happens to their idyllic life, when his real identity is discovered?

This was the first book in this series that I have read...nothing like picking it up with book 7, huh? Having said that, I was in no way confused about what was going on. There were characters from the previous books in this story, but I don't think that it took anything about from it because I hadn't read them.

I did really enjoy this story. Most historical romances are not between a lord and an actress, so it was a nice change of pace. Having one of the main characters also be mute was definitely something that stands out in this book. Hoyt did a wonderful job with this and it was not a distraction to the story. We also have the mystery of who actually committed the crime that Apollo was accused of.

Overall, it was a great out of the ordinary read for me and I will definitely be going back to read the books that come before this.  The next book in the series is about 2 of the secondary characters in this one and Hoyt did a wonderful job of giving us just enough about them to keep us coming back for more!

Can these two strong-willed highlanders realize that what they need is right in front of them?

Moonlight Raider by Amanda Scott

Moonlight Raider by Amanda Scott.

This is book 1 in the Border Nights series.

Shortly after losing his father, Lord Walter Scott of Rankilburn find himself walking the forest contemplating his new role. He comes across a half-naked girl on the run and offers her protection in his keep.

Molly Cockburn has fled her home the night of her forced wedding. Not knowing where to go, but needing to get away from the horrible man her brother forced her to marry she heads out into the night. When Walter (Wat) finds her, she doesn't tell him who she is in fear of him returning her to her family.

Upon arrival at the keep, Wat's family soon determines her identity and are determined to help her get out of her marriage. Molly is fearful of their help, thinking that her family will retaliate against them for it.

Molly's wedding is soon declared unlawful, but the only way to save her is to get her married to someone that can protect her from her family.  Since Wat has already promised her his protection, he is the perfect choice to fill that position. Can he convince Molly that marriage to him is the right choice?

I've read of all Amanda Scott's other books and enjoyed going back the the Highlands with her. While we didn't see as much of Watt and Molly together as I would have liked to, I still thoroughly enjoyed their story. Being such a big history buff, I really enjoy the historical facts that Scott weaves into her romances.

I loved Wat's grandmother and other secondary characters as much as the H/H of the story. I hope that when Scott continues this series that they are a major part of it too.

I'm eagerly awaiting the rest of the series and can't wait to see what Scott has in store for us!!
