Love's Justice by Joan Avery

Love's Justice by Joan Avery.

This is book 2 in the Worth Brothers series.

Victoria Wentworth is going to court to make sure her ex-fiancee won't get her money. Victoria's father signed a wedding contract without her knowledge. But after her father goes back to America and she meets her fiancee, Victoria knows there is no way she can marry the despicable man.

Hugh Worth, the Earl Montgomery and Lord Chancellor of the Exchequer, is the judge and jury for Victoria's case. Before the trial starts, he just imagines that Victoria is one of those American Heiresses just looking for a title, but he soon learns there is much more to her than he thinks.

What happens when they find themselves attracted to each other. Will it taint the outcome of Victoria's case?

I really liked Hugh and the fact that his attraction to Victoria knocked him so off kilter that he did things he normally wouldn't have done (kiss her after just being introduced).

I was a little turned off with all the spouting off that Victoria did in the courtroom and out in public. I just thought it was a bit too much. I've read several books lately that had heroines that would be considered suffragettes and I don't think it needed to be taken quite so far.

The story also had many secondary characters that I enjoyed reading about that definitely made it a worthwhile read.

Trapped at the Altar by Jane Feather

Trapped at the Altar by Jane Feather.

Ariadne "Ari" Carfax is not ready to go through with the betrothal made when she was but a child. She may love her betrothed, but she is in love with another man (Gabriel). After her grandfather's death, Ari's uncle is determined to see her married to Ivor Chalfont and ambushes her with the marriage ceremony at her grandfather's wake. There is nothing let for her to do but comply and take her vows.

Even though Ivor has known Ari since they were little children, he is not against the marriage between them. Ari claims that she could never love him the ways she loves Gabriel, but Ivor is determined to make their marriage work.

Going to London on a mission to reinstate the family at Court, Ivor hopes that Ari will get Gabriel out of her mind. What he doesn't know is that Gabriel is waiting in London to whisk Ari away.

Can the long trip to London convience Ari the Ivor is the right man for her?

I loved Ivor and I liked Ari. I kinda thought that Ivor was too good for Ari. He was willing to overlook her having had sex with someone else before their marriage which most men would not have done during that time. Ivor seemed to be making all the concessions where as Ari just didn't seem to want to grow up and take responsibility for her actions.

It took awhile for Ari to grow into her adulthood role and that is when my attitude toward her changed (almost at the end). I really wish that her change had come about sooner in the book.

The writing was good and I'll definitely pick up more from this author.

For Her Spy Only by Robyn DeHart

For Her Spy Only by Robyn DeHart.

This is book 2 in the Masquerading Mistresses series.

Winifred and her maid are stranded on the side of the road when Alistair, the Marquess of Coventry, comes to their rescue.  With no other options, they accepted the help and stay with Alistair until they can travel again.

Winifred finds herself attracted to Alistair and instead of fighting it, Winifred gives into it. Her betrothed had jilted her and started spreading rumors. Since she was paying for crimes that she didn't commit, why not actually do something to deserve the scorn.

Six years later finds Winifred a widow with a young son and Alistair knocking on her door.  He has come to look at her husband's maps and is surprised to find she is the widow of the man he came to see.

Their chemistry rekindles instantly, but Winifred must keep her distance to protect her son. What will Alistair do when he finds out the truth she has been hiding?

This was a pretty quick read, but I think DeHart did a good job of hooking me in with a satisfying story.  I liked that Winifred was not your typical society miss and took control of her life (feel an attraction, don't fight it!). Alistair was looking for the maps to decode a message for a spy mission. The added element of that made it a very enjoyable read.

DeHart does a wonderful job with novellas. She sucks me in and keeps me enthralled just like with a full length novel. I can't wait to see what she has coming up!

Scandalous Summer Nights an Anthology

Scandalous Summer Nights by Grace Callaway, Sabrina Darby, Jennifer Haymore, Sue London, Kate McKinley, Sandy Raven and Vivienne Westlake.
This anthology includes seven series-opening novellas.
The Widow Vanishes by Grace Callaway

Annabel Foster has just found out that her husband has passed away and left her in debt to a man no one is willing to cross. After trying to earn the money respectfully, she is forced to sell her body. Her first night turns out unexpectedly.
William McLeod has been given his choice of women for the night in reward for a job well done. Little did he know that the woman he choice would change his life forever.
This was a nice quick read. This is an introduction to her new Heart of Enquiry series, but had a few characters from her Mayhem in Mayfair series too. The story has me hunting down the Mayhem in Mayfair series to read!

Scandal Before Sunrise by Sabrina Darby

Abigail Billings had been one of the wild girls before disappearing from the ton for three years. Now she is back and looking for a respectable husband before everyone learns that there is no longer any money with her father's title.  Unfortunately,  the man that interests her is not interested in marriage but wants an affair instead.
Elliot Jones has just returned from fighting for England and is ready to have some fun. His friends talk about bad girl Abigail and she has peaked his interests. But when he finally meets her, she is no longer that fun lovin' girl his friends talked about.
Can Elliot find that fun lovin' girl behind the woman that wants a respectable marriage?
A great story with a mischievous girl trying to do right. This novella definitely peaked my interest for reading the rest of the books in the Weekly Scandal series. I'm hoping the series includes Elliot's friends from this novella!

A Highlander's Heart by Jennifer Haymore

Claire Campbell is determined to fix her marriage, but to do that she must find her husband who is in the middle of fighting a war.  Finding her husband wounded on the battlefield at Waterloo, Claire is determined to see him regain his health.
Rob Campbell thinks it's an angel approaching him on the battlefield, but when she gets closer he realizes that it is his wife whom he is estranged.

Can these two mind their marriage in the middle of this horrible war?
Haymore does an excellent job of setting up her new series. We are introduced to the male leads and given enough of a back story on each to peak our interest.  Her new Highland Knights series is definitely on my TBR list!!

Lord Lucifer's Disciple by Sue London
Elisa Jarvis know that all her husband prospects are just after her dowry, plus they are all boring! That is until she meets a mysterious foreigner at a masked ball.
John Howards has always been awkward during social functions, so when he finally agrees to attend his cousin's masked ball he pretends to be his foreign friend. It gives him the courage to do things he would never dream of as himself.
What will Elisa do when she unmasks her foreign friend?
This was my first story by Sue London and I really enjoyed it.  So much so that I need to hunt down all her Haberdasher books to read the stories of all the secondary characters I meet in this one.
How to Lose a Duke in Ten Days by Kate McKinley

Pippa Welby can't imagine why the man that gave her the cut direct is asking her to marry him. He has even given her an invitation to her own engagement ball that is to happen in 10 days. Pippa has been looked down on by the peerage her whole life because of her heritage and there is no way she is going to marry into it.

Lucas Alexander, the Duke of Arlington, is smitten with Pippa the first time he sees her. So taken with her, he was at a loss for words and walks away from her. Finding out that her father owns the largest coal mine in the area is just the icing on the cake.

What happens when what starts out as a seduction of convience turns into true passion? Can Pippa forgive Lucas when she finds out why he really wants to marry her?

It was a very enjoyable read. It's often hard for authors to write novellas without the story feeling rushed. McKinley does an excellent job of keeping the pace of the story without leaving out any details. Lucas was definitely an alpha male, but also showed that he had a softer side to him. Pippa, as a headstrong young miss, was not going to let Lucas walk all over her. They were perfect for each other!
Miss Amelia Lands a Duke by Sandy Raven
Amelia Manners-Sutton is the companion for her aunt, whom is not very nice, but she took Amelia in when she didn't have any where else to go. Since her aunt doesn't want Amelia to ruin anything for her at the house party, Amelia is left to her own devices and finds herself wondering the gardens where she meets a man named "Sir." She is intrigued by him, but it is not until she is almost caught in the library with him that things get interesting.
Marcus Halden, the Duke of Caversham, is just looking for some peace and quiet when she encounters "Miss." He is also intrigued and when she is about to speak and alert her aunt to their presence in the library he kisses her.
What will happen when they are caught in a compromising position?
There was just something about this one that I didn't like. I think part of it is the age difference in the H/H. He was old enough to be her father and I just don't want to read about that in one of my romances.  The other was the editing of the piece, which I hope was fixed before publication....
Lady Northham's Wicked Surrender by Vivienne Westlake
Rowena, Countess of Northham, is in the home of her former suitor when she learns that he will be arriving soon.  She was jilted by the man and doesn't know how she will act when she sees him again.
Simon, Lord Rutherford, is on his way back to claim his former love.  She rejected him once, but he has hopes that she is ready to be his forever.
What happens when they learn what they thought happened, was all lies?
I really enjoyed this very short story and am looking forward to reading more by this author.
Over all I really enjoyed this set of stories and have found several new authors that I will be putting on my TBR list. I would definitely pick this one up for your keeper shelf!!

How to Lose a Lord in 10 Days or Less by Elizabeth Michels

How to Lose a Lord in 10 Days or Less by Elizabeth Michels.

This is book 3 in the Tricks of the Ton series.

Having lost the respect of the Ton, Andrew Clifton has been hiding out in Scotland until the scandal has blown over. Unfortunately, he gets a letter from his mother saying there is trouble on his estate. As Andrew makes his way home, he encounters two men that appear to be after him. Trying to get away from them, he jumps a hedge and literally throws himself at Katie Moore.

Always enjoying the horse farm to society life, Katie enjoys her life without mingling with the Ton.  Having been injured in an accident while riding her horse, she has shied away from having anything to do with them since the accident. But when it soon become apparent that Andrew's horse needs her tender care, she slowly makes her way back into her former life.
Having decided that marriage was not the life for her, Katie never imagined that a Lord would show up at her doorstep and intrigue her enough to consider changing her mind. Andrew is just as intrigued and does everything in his power to spend time with Katie.

What will happen when Andrew finds out that someone in Katie's family is the one causing so much trouble on his estate? Can their blossoming romance survive or will it die before it really has a chance to begin?

In the other stories in the series, Andrew is pretty much an @$$, so it was nice to see someone put him in his place and have him take notice and change. He was always looking for the perfect wife and he definitely didn't find it in Katie. But even with all of Katie's imperfections, Andrew can't seem to keep away from her.  They both decided that this "thing" between them would only last until Andrew's horse was well enough to travel, but would that be enough for either of them?

I really liked Katie and hated how her family had treated her since her mother ran off.  Her father definitely had some making up to do!!  I loved her independence but she still have a very vulnerable side which made me like her even more.

I really hope that Michels continues with this series as I would hate to not visit these characters again.

Lady Windermere's Lover by Miranda Neville.

Lady Windermere's Lover by Miranda Neville.

This is book 3 in the Wild Quartet.

Lady Windermere, Cynthia, has lived the last year without her husband. Shortly after their marriage, Lord Windermere took a government assignment out of the country. Since then, she has been hanging out with her friends and basically living her life as she wants with no husband to answer to.

Damian, Lord Windermere, didn’t want to get married but found it was the only way that he could get the deed to his mother’s home from the owner. He lost the deed to his mother’s home during a card game with one of his best friends. Unfortunately, that friend lost it to someone else later that night. The owner would only give it back to Damian if he married the owner’s niece.

During their time apart, Cynthia has spent a lot of time with Damian's former best friend. Now that Damian is back, he forbids Cynthia from spending time with him.  Even though Damian believes she has been unfaithful to him, Cynthia just couldn't bring herself to have an affair.

Even though Damian never wanted this marriage he finds himself falling for his wife. Can he make this a real marriage after that way he had treated his wife?

I really enjoyed this story. Cynthia has been a secondary character in the previous stories and what little information we were given about her, had me on pins and needles waiting for her story. She has had an on-going flirtation with the Duke of Danford, who use to be one of her husband’s best friends. I also wanted to know why Damian married Cynthia and then soon abandoned her. Neville did not disappoint me!

We see Damian come back into his wife’s life and demanding that she end her affair with Danford. She is not willing to do so (even though it never got physical). Damian was not around for her and Danford was.  She is not willing to give up her friendship.  I really liked that she stood up for herself and didn't let Damian run all over her.  The story also included the dynamics of Damian's relationship with his former friends. Cynthia had become friends with them and had one type of relationship with them and then Damian had to re-establish his relationships. This added another level to the plot development.

Neville's next story in the series is the Duke of Danford's. I can't wait to read it!!

The Escape by Mary Balogh

The Escape by Mary Balogh.

This is book 3 in the Survivors' Club series.

Having survived his injuries during the Napoleonic Wars, Sir Benedict (Ben) Harper is trying to figure out what he is going to do with the rest of his life.  Having known that the life of a military man was his desired future, he never contemplated doing anything else. When those dreams are crushed, he ends up a lose ends. To pass the time, he visits his sister in the country while she is recuperating from an illness.

While out riding his horse, he literally runs over Samantha McKay whom he soon learns is a young widow still in deep morning. Samantha has been living with her uptight sister-in-law since the death of her husband and had to get out of the house for some fresh air. She didn't know that she would be accosted by horse and rider.

Having not started out on the right foot, Ben gets his sister to take him for tea at Samantha's home where he finagles time for an apology.  They soon become friends of a sort and when Samantha's father-in-law demands that she comes and lives with him, she goes to Ben for help.

They are soon on their way to Wales where Samantha has an old shack that has been left to her from her great aunt.  They must travel as husband and wife so that Samantha is not totally ruined by traveling alone with an unmarried man.  In close confinement and learning more and more about each other, Ben and Samantha find that they are fighting their attraction to each other.  What will happen when they reach Wales? Will they both find what they are looking for?

After reading Vincent's story in book 2 of the series, I didn't think that I could love the lead male character any more. I was wrong!!  I LOVED Ben in this story.  As with the other Survivor Club members, we've met Ben in the other stories but we see just a glimpse of him.

We know that he is determined to walk again and has a good since of humor (you have to with all the other club members teasing each other all the time), but you don't get to see the depth of his character. I guess that is the same with any series you read, you learn the most about the character when it is their story. But I was just blown away by Ben, I wanted to take him home with me!!

Samantha was also a very strong character.  She went into her first marriage head over heals in love with her husband and he didn't turn out to be the man she thought he was. Even knowing that, she stuck by him and nursed him after being wounded in the wars.  After his death, Samantha just wants some freedom.  The shack in Wales is her only way to get it and Ben is the only one that can take her there.

I can't say enough about this story. I really enjoyed reading it and didn't want it to end.  The next story in the series is about Flavian, Viscount Ponsonby, whom is a stutterer. I'm very interested to see where Balogh takes this story as I have a personal connection to a stutterer.
