Tycoon by Joanna Shupe

Tycoon by Joanna Shupe

This is book 0.5 in the Knickerbocker Club series.

Waiting to board a train, Ted Harper is kissed by a woman claiming to be his wife. He goes against his better judgement and invites her to travel with him even though she is probably a swindler.

Clara Dawson is use to taking care of herself, but when she witnesses a murder, she finds herself running with no one to turn to. When help comes in the form of a stranger, Clara decides to go ahead a accept.

Ted and Clara are instantly drawn to one another, but with danger looming all around, can their pretend marriage turn into one in truth?

I was really looking forward to the start of Shupe's newest series, but unfortunately I was disappointed. I think the series definitely has promise, but I just felt like this story was too rushed. I really wish that Shupe had decided to make it full length novel so that we could enjoy the masterful storytelling that I have come to know and love.

Having said that, I am still really looking forward to book one in the series, Magnate, which comes out in April!

Not Always a Saint by Mary Jo Putney

Not Always a Saint by Mary Jo Putney

This is book 7 in the Lost Lords series.

Daniel Herbert has suddenly inherited a title that he has no use for. He is a doctor by trade and doesn't want the burden that the title will bring to him. But knowing that he take up the mantle, he heads to London to find a bride that can run his estate for him while he continues to practice medicine.

Jessie Kelham's looks have caused her more pain than anything else in her life. As a recent widow, she would like nothing better than to stay in her home and enjoy raising her daughter. But when her nephew by marriage threatens to take away her daughter's heritage, Jessie realizes that she needs a high born husband to help protect her.

Daniel and Jessie can't seem to fight their attraction for each other even when the other is not what they think they wanted. Can they make a marriage work?

After reading Not Quite a Wife, I wondered who Putney would pair Daniel with. He was so dedicated to his work that he didn't seem to have time to find a significant other. I really liked the twist of Daniel inheriting a title. It forced him to go into society when he wouldn't have gone back had he the choice.

The chemistry between Daniel and Jessie was red hot from the very beginning. It was always sizzling at the surface every time they were near one another.  When chemistry is that strong, it is hard to deny it.

I really enjoyed this story and I can't wait to see what Putney has for us next!

If He's Noble by Hannah Howell

If He's Noble by Hannah Howell

This is book 7 in the Wherlocke series.

Lady Primrose "Rose" Wooten must find her brother, but she keeps getting waylaid by men her aunt sent after her. During her travels, she runs into Sir Bened Vaughn. Not wanting any help, she turns down his offer to travel with her. But Bended insists and Rose has a hard time telling him no.

Like the rest of the members of his family, Bened has special abilities. He can sense when danger when it is coming and protect those that are with him. With Rose's aunt sending men to chase after her, his ability came in handy.

Can Rose find her brother and stay out of the clutches of her Aunt's men?

Loved this story, just as I have the rest of the series. I have been looking forward to Bened's story since he was first introduced in the series.

Rose and Bened's attraction for each other was almost instantaneous. Unfortunately Bened tried to ignore it as Rose was not of his class (she was nobility). Those stubborn men for you!! I really liked Rose. She was definitely not your typical lady of the times. She knew she had to find her brother before her aunt did and set out to find him on her own. Luckily for her (and us), she found Bened along the way.

I really hope to see more of Lilybet (a Wherlocke that was found in the course of the story) as she was a breathe of fresh air. Her story would definitely be an interesting one!!

What To Do With A Duke by Sally MacKenzie

What To Do With A Duke by Sally MacKenzie

This is book 1 in the Spinster House series.

Miss Isabelle Catherine (Cat) Hutting is desperate to get out of her parent's home. Not that she doesn't love her family, she does. But there are so many people in the family that she never gets any time to do what she dreams of...to write a book.

When the Spinster House is suddenly vacated, her dreams seem to be coming true. Unfortunately, two other spinsters also want the house. She also doesn't count on being attracted to the owner of the house, when he shows up in town to see to the leasing of his property.

Haunted by a curse given by the original owner of Spinster House stating that "No duke shall live to see his heir's birth", Marcus, the Duke of Hart, is prepared to spend a couple of days in town to find a new resident and then be on his merry way.  He didn't count on falling for a woman who had no plans of getting married.

What can two people who didn't ever plan on getting married do when they fall for each other?

I loved this story!! We were introduced to Cat in In the Spinster's Bed and I had hoped we would see more of her. She is older and I think this always makes for a more interesting character. Then we have Marcus, who is definitely not ready to marry especially when it means his certain death.

I liked reading the transformation of these two characters going from not wanting to marry to falling in love with each other. I can't wait to read about the next resident of Spinster House!

In the Spinster's Bed by Sally MacKenzie

In the Spinster's Bed by Sally MacKenzie

This novella is book 0.5 in the Spinster House series.

Annabelle Frost has made a life for herself after being thrown out of her home by her father for her wanton behavior. She has a home of her own and a job that she likes. But what happens when her past finds her in this new life?

Lord William Wattles has come to Loves Bridge to get away from his notorious wife. He never expects to see Annabelle in this tiny town or to see he is as attracted to her as he was 20 years ago. William would love to take up where they left off all those years ago, but Annabelle won't get involved with a married man.

Can they keep their mutual attraction from getting the better of them?

I enjoyed this short story. It gave us a nice introduction to the town of Loves Bridge and some insight to what the rest of the series will be like. I always like reunion stories and this was no exception.  I can't wait to read the next book in the series.

How to Marry a Royal Highlander by Vanessa Kelly

How to Marry a Royal Highlander by Vanessa Kelly

This is book 4 in the Renegade Royals series.

Eden Whitney has gotten herself into trouble one too many times and her mother is insisting that she take a break from the ton. Eden's BIL suggests she go to Scotland and stay with his best friend, Alastair (Alec) Gilbride. The problem with that is Eden and Alec clash at every turn.

Alec hasn't been home in ten years, but his grandfather is ailing and he must do his duty...get married. Only Alec doesn't want to marry the woman his grandfather has picked out for him. He wants Eden.

Can Alec convince Eden that he is the right man for her?
LOVED this story. I fell in love with Alec while reading How to Plan a Wedding for a Royal Spy. After watching Alec and Eden interact in that story, I knew that Kelly would pair them up next.

As I've mentioned before, I love to read stories in which the H/H banter back and forth. This story is full of that!!! I didn't want the story to end...I think Kelly needs to do another Renegade Royals story where she reunites all the characters just so I can see them again!!

What a wonderful conclusion to one of my favorite series ever!!!

The Lady Hellion by Joanna Shupe

The Lady Hellion by Joanna Shupe

This is book 3 in the Wicked Deceptions series.

Trying to fight for the rights of the poor, Lady Sophia Barnes, has gotten herself challenged to a duel. Not knowing how to fire a gun, she must find someone to teach her. The only person who she dares to ask is Damien "Quint" Beecham, Viscount Quint. The man that broke her heart years ago.

Battling his own demons, Quint doesn't want this intrusion into his life. Especially from the woman he has not stopped wanting. But knowing that Sophia will continue on with or without his help, he reluctantly agrees to help her learn to shoot as well as help her with her cause.

Can these two former sweethearts find the love that each of them are craving?

I loved this story just as much as the other two in the series! Sophia is not your typical society miss and Quint is definitely not your typical lord. They two of them complimented each other very well.

With the added mystery of who is murdering the prostitutes and Quint's condition, the story had me on the edge of my seat throughout! This is definitely one of those stories that you read in one sitting because you just can't put it down.

I can't wait to see what Shupe has in store for us next!

The Harlot Countess by Joanna Shupe

The Harlot Countess by Joanna Shupe

This is book 2 in the Wicked Deceptions series.

Having been ruined in the eyes of society during her debut, Maggie was quickly married off to the Lord Hawkins. Several years have passed and Maggie once again emerges into society but plays the part of the "Harlot Countess". What others don't know, is that she is the renown artist know as Lemarc who takes pleasure in ridiculing Simon Barrett, the Earl of Winchester for his part in her heart break.

Simon is determined to find out who the artist know as Lemarc is. He is tired of being ridiculed by the man. He is desperate enough to go to his former love and get her expert opinion on the subject. Having his heart broken by Maggie once was hard enough, but can he allow his heart to suffer it again?

What will Simon do when he finds out that the person he is hunting is none other than his former love?

I really enjoyed this story! It is nice to get away from the "prim and proper" debutants that are normally in a historical romance. With Maggie, we get a girl who did the right thing and she was taken advantage of. She then decides to take her life into her own hands and do as she pleases. She isn't out to make anyone happy but herself.

Of course, I would have loved to have seen Simon believe in his love for Maggie when they were younger and stick by her, but then there wouldn't be a story. I did like that he seemed to have been pining for her all this time, serves him right for turning his back on her! But Shupe did a wonderful job of bring him back into my good graces.

I can't wait for the next book in the series, which comes out at the end of May.

Alanna By Kathleen Bittner Roth

Alanna By Kathleen Bittner Roth

This is book 2 in the When Hearts Dare series.

Alanna Morgan was drawn to Wolf the first time she saw him in San Francisco. When he turns up on the the ship she and her family are traveling to Boston on, she actually gets to know the man. Alanna's parents have arranged a marriage for her, but she will do anything to get out of it including stealing from her father.

Wolf doesn't have time for a woman in his life and when reaching Boston, he spends weeks trying to find information about his mother's killer without any luck. It's not until he runs into Alanna and her bodyguard, Old Chinese, that he gets any information.

Can Wolf let go of the past long enough to find the love of a lifetime?

I really loved this story. We meet Wolf in Roth's Celine, the first story in the When Hearts Dare series. He intrigued me then and I couldn't wait to read his story.
Roth did not disappoint! There are so many elements to this story that keep you reading to the very end.  Wolf needs to find his mother's killer and in the process finds out his true heritage which leads to more uncertainties.  His travels take us from San Francisco to Boston to Scotland.

Alanna's bodyguard, Old Chinese, basically raised her. We see why she isn't anything like her scheming parents. We also see a woman that is not like others of the time period. She has learned many things from Old Chinese including a form of martial arts.

This is definitely one of my favorite books that I have read recently and can't wait to see what Roth comes up with next!
