Crimson Heart by Heather McCollum

Crimson Heart by Heather McCollum.

This is book 3 in the Highland Hearts series.

Searc Munro comes from a family of healers and when his killing magic is revealed he leaves his family in disgrace. While making his way to Edinburgh, he encounters a lady being robbed by thieves.  After rescuing her, he offers to escort her to Edinburgh and her cousin.

With no family to speak of, Elena has nowhere else to go but to her "cousin" in Edinburgh. But upon meeting her "cousin", Searc thinks he is up to no good and stays on as Elena's protector.

One thing leads to another and Elena and Searc must act like they are married.  Their growing attraction to each other makes it hard to not consumate the relationship, making it a marriage in truth.

Searc know that Elena is keeping secrets from him, but since he has some of his own he doesn't press her for answers.  What will happen when they finally learn the secrets the other has been holding back?

Again, McCollum has hit it out of the ballpark with her story.  She writes with just the right amount of intrigue, humor, and romance to satisfy any readers tastes.

Having "known" Searc since he was a young child, it was hard to see that he thought his magic was evil. Elena was the perfect match to get Searc to see his magic for what it truly was, a gift and not a curse.

I really hope that McCollum is not done with this series as I am definitely not ready to stop reading about these families!

Beautiful Distraction by Jess Michaels

Beautiful Distraction by Jess Michaels.

This is book 4 in the Pleasure Wars series and is a novella.

Having just lost her latest protector, Olivia Cranfield decides to join her friend on a trip to Bath. Violet has a job to do and Olivia goes along to help her seduce the Earl of Windbury. The Earl has a best friend that needs distracting and Olivia is up for the task.

Malcolm Graham knows that Olivia is just distracting him so that her friend can get to the Earl, but he can't fight is attraction to her.  He feels an instant connection to her that he can't deny.

What started out as a fun interlude, quickly escalates into something more. How will Malcolm react when he learns that truth about what Olivia and Violet are up to?

Let me start by saying that you will enjoy this story much better if you have already read The Beauty and the Earl. The two stories run concurrent to each other.

I really enjoyed Olivia when I read the Beauty and the Earl, so it was nice to see the events unfold from her perspective.  This story was different from most historical romances as it involved a courtesan, but it is still throughly enjoyable.

If you are looking for a quick, delightful read, you will not be disappointed.

You can get this book at Amazon, Kobo, Samhain, and Barnes & Noble.

Beauty and the Barbarian by Amy Jarecki

Beauty and the Barbarian by Amy Jarecki.

This is book 3 in the Highland Force series.

Ian MacLeod is on the run from his uncle's henchman. He has taken his uncle's wife to the safety of her clan to save her from the brutal hand of his uncle and needless to say he was not happy about it.  Unfortunately the henchman caught up with Ian and after shooting him, left him for dead.

Luckily for Ian, Merrin found his washed up body. After determining that he wasn't dead, Merrin and her father took Ian back to their cottage to nurse him back to health.

Merrin is mesmerized from her first sight of Ian. Having been secluded on an island with only her father her whole life because of her "mark of the devil, Merrin has never encountered anyone like Ian. Afraid of what he will think of her, Merrin tries to keep are mark hidden from Ian.

Eventually he discovers her mark and Merrin is surprised that Ian doesn't think much about it. Ian got to know her as a person before seeing the mark and knows that it can't mean she is an evil person.

Soon they have to go on the run as the henchman has learned that Ian is alive.  Can Ian keep himself, Merrin and her father alive? If he succeeds, what will happen to their growing attraction to each other? Ian is a laird's son and Merrin is considered a witch by the rest of the clan, could it ever work for them?

I absolutely loved the first two books in this series, but I didn't think this one was as good as the others. The writing seemed a bit weaker than the others, but it could have been a feeling that Jarecki was trying to convey in regard to the heroine. Something just seemed to be off.

I also didn't like that Calum from the first book in the series was dead (he and Anne were suppose to grow old together!!)  :(     But the story couldn't have progressed the way that it did if Ian hadn't been shipped off to be fostered by his uncle.

But having said that, I did enjoy the story and it was nice to see Anne, Enya and Bran again.

You can get the book at Amazon and Barnes & Noble.

Wicked Temptation

Wicked Temptation by Zoe Archer

This is book 3 in the Nemesis, Unlimited series.

After her husband's death, Bronwyn Parrish learns that her fortune is gone. The day she leaves her home to find work, she has an unexpected guest.  Marco Black, from Nemesis Unlimited, has taken the job of trying to get her fortune back. Nemesis heard about Bronwyn's trouble from her former maid. They normally didn't help the nobility, but they were convinced that Bronwyn was worthy.

They soon learn that Bronwyn's late husband's business manager stole the money to cover his gambling debts and travel to Paris to find him.  After locating the man, they learn that he owes money to one of France's most ruthless crime syndicates, Les Grillons. Unfortunately, the business manager can't pay back the money he owes and is soon killed.  Since Bronwyn and Marco witnessed the murder, they are now on the run from Les Grillons.

Marco searches out a former associate of his for help.  While running from Les Grillons, Marco and Bronwyn can't fight their attraction to each other and soon become lovers after agreeing that this would be a short affair. But what happens when their feeling start to run much deeper?

I LOVED this story. You see bits of Marco in the other books in the series and knowing that he was a spy for England had intrigued me. His story did not disappoint me.

Browyn was not your typical society wife.  When she lost all her money, she didn't lose it. She had set a plan in motion when Marco swept in to help her find the missing money.  Had she been the typical society miss, Marco would have never fallen for her.  His background working with Nemesis has given him a dislike of the upper class.  It said a lot to Marco that Bronwyn's maid was the one asking for help. She had to be someone special to inspire such loyalty from an employee.

As with all the other stories in the series, the significant other seems to fall right into the life of Nemesis. The organization plays such a big part in their lives that the relationships wouldn't work otherwise. Because of this, these stories are not your typical historical romance with the relationships taking place at several society balls. If you are looking for that type of story, this book (and series) is not for you. But if you are looking for a historical romance with some adventure and mystery then this is the series for you.  I'm really hoping that Archer continues to write this series as I just can't seem to get enough of it.

You can get this book at Amazon, Barnes & Noble, iBooks, and Books A Million.

Duke of Darkness by Anabelle Bryant

Duke of Darkness by Anabelle Bryant.

This is book two in the series. You can read about book 1 HERE.

The Duke of Wharncliffe, Devlin Ravensdale, has just learned that his last living relative has just passed away.  Her last request was to have Devlin take care of her ward, Alex, and arrange a suitable marriage. When Devlin arrives to do just that, he learns that his ward is not a young boy but a beautiful marriage young lady.

Alexandra (Lexi as Devlin calls her) is not happy about being put into another man's care. She ran away from home when her father tried to marry her off, she don't want someone else doing it to her again. After losing a bet to Devlin, Lexi agrees to be taken to London to find a husband.

With the help of a friend and his sister, Devlin ventures back into society to launch Lexi only to be reminded why he rarely returned to the social scene.  He endures because he is determined to fulfill his aunt's last wish. But what happens when Devlin decides that he wants Lexi for himself?

We met Devlin in the previous story and the only thing we really know about him is that he doesn't venture out into society very often. But I really liked is easy going relationship with the other characters so I was intrigued enough to really want to read his story.  Bryant did not disappoint.

Lexi is perfect for Devlin. She wants to marry someone that she loves. Her father already tried to marry her off once before and she ran away instead of following his wishes.  Her attraction to Devlin is almost instantaneous upon meeting him and she feels like he feels the same way.  She goes along with his plan to find her a husband knowing all along that he is the man for her. She just needs to convience him.

Even though Devlin is falling for Lexi, he doesn't think that he would make her a good husband. He thinks madness runs in his family and couldn't do that to her.  Lexi does everything in her power to convience him otherwise.

I really hope that Bryant continues with this series as I would love to see what happens to the secondary characters!

The Seduction of Sarah Marks by Kathleen Bittner Roth

The Seduction of Sarah Marks by Kathleen Bittner Roth.

Sarah Marks wakes up to find herself in a strange bed with a man she does not know.  That man is Lord Eastleigh. He tells her that she was hit over the head when someone attacked their carriage. Other than her name, Sarah can't remember anything of her past, including what she was doing in the carriage with man that is in her bed. Eastleigh says the best course of action is to go back to his home where a doctor can help her with the amnesia.

As Sarah and Eastleigh spend more time together, they have to fight their attraction to each other. They don't know anything about Sarah's past and the doctor doesn't want anything to interfere with her recovery.

Soon Sarah remembers her own name and that she has a husband. What will happen when Sarah remembers it all and learns that Eastleigh was hiding something about her past all along?

This was the first novel that I have read by the author and I throughly enjoyed it!  All the little twists and turns had me not wanting to put the book down. There was even one twist that had me gasping out loud after reading it.

I did find it a little unrealistic that Eastleigh and Sarah would both suffer from amnesia, but I guess that made the story what it was.

I hope that Roth continues this series with stories about all the Malvern siblings!

The Right Wife by Beverly Barton

The Right Wife by Beverly Barton.

Maggie Campbell must move her younger brother and sister to Tuscumbia, Alabama to start their life over.  Her mother and father have passed away and her uncle is the only hope of a future. She made promises to her father and the only way to keep those is to get herself settled with a good paying job.

Unfortunately for Maggie, upon arrival to Tuscumbia she is involved with an incident that had her Aaron Stone. Aaron doesn't have the best reputation and Maggie need hers to be spotless if her siblings are to make something of themselves.

Aaron and Maggie can't seem to stay away from each other and are both determined to get what they want out of life. Aaron needs to marry a "lady" so that he can get over his stigma of being a bastard and Maggie needs to be able to fulfill her promise to her father which means her reputation needs to be spotless.

Can they both get what they need without forsaking the love they feel for each other?

I was not impressed with the writing in this story at all. Barton is a well-known author and I was disappointed that this story did not live up to my expectations. This is being published after the death of the author, so maybe it didn't get all of the re-write that it would have if she was still with us.

There are other aspects of the story that I was not thrilled with, but don't want to write any spoilers. I did like the premise of the story, but the execution of it was not good at all. I honestly don't know if I will read anything else my this author or not after reading this...

Noble Destiny by Katie MacAlister

Noble Destiny by Katie MacAlister.

This is book 2 in the Noble series.

Charlotte Collins has come back to London after a disastrous first marriage. She has set her sights on Alasdair MacGregor as her second husband.  Having landed themselves in a compromising situation, they are quickly married.

Alasdair won't consumate the marriage until Charlotte is in love with him, so she sets her mind to do just that. Between Charlotte constantly getting her meaning of words wrong and Alasdair working on his steam engine there are plenty of antics to liven up this marriage.

Can this turn into a marriage of love?

I really tried to like this book. I enjoyed the first one in the series, but this one was just horrible.  The storyline had potential, but the author blew it with annoying characters.

The heroine was a selfish snob and didn't take anyone or anything else into consideration. That combined with the fact that she was always misusing words was quite annoying. Add to that the long monologues from the butler and it was like pulling teeth to get me to finish the book.

I know this is a re-issued book and maybe MacAlister's writing has gotten better, but at this point I don't think I will be picking up anymore of her books. I think there should have been some major re-write done before re-releasing this book and maybe the whole series.
