During a drunken night with his friends, Lucas announces that he is ready to get married. But it seems to him that all the woman want him for his title and money. So he and his friends decide on a scheme where Lucas will join his friend's house party, but in the position of a footman. That would give him access to the woman to see how they treat the servants, since that would show what type of person they were. The plan was to just be observational...but he soon encounters Frances.
Frances is at the house party only because her mother has made her attend. She knows that the man her mother wants her to wed will be attending and she wants nothing to do with him. Her plan is to be a shrew, so that he will decide not to offer for her. She finds that the only time she can be herself is when she has discussions with the friendly footman, Lucas.
While Lucas had no plans to get close to any of the women at the party, he can't seen to stay away from Frances. He is falling for her, but she doesn't know his true identity. Can he regain her trust after she learns the truth?
I really enjoyed Lucas and Frances's story. I liked watching Lucas try to navigate the party and try to be the subservient person that he was not used to being. I also really liked Frances. She wanted social justice and would do anything in her power to achieve it.
This was a great start to a new series by Bowman. I look forward to reading the next book in the series to see how the Duke of Worthington survives his stint as a groomsman!!
