Marie is trying to perfect her fertilizer after a miscalculation in her formula causes a field to go up in flames, when her brother arrives and insists that they must leave in a hurry. Men from the French government want Marie's formula and they will do anything to get it. During their hasty exit, their carriage crashes. Marie wakes up in an asylum with no memory of her past.

Max has been sent to uncover the formula from Marie. It was used to blow up his brother's ship and he isn't about to let it get into the hands of the French to kill more Englishmen. Since Marie has lost her memory, he poses as her husband and rescues her from the asylum. His one job is to get the formula from Marie, but he never counted on the feelings that would develop for her. The more time he spends with her, he can't imagine that she created the explosives to harm others. Will his feelings for Marie end up interfering with the job his government has tasked him with?
