An Enemy at the Highland Court by Celeste Barclay

The king has decided that Cairren will marry. She knew the time would come for this and has prepared herself for this. But before leaving to meet her intended, she learns that he is in love with another. Knowing that there is nothing she can do, she travels north to begin her new life.

Padraig has plans to marry another when the decree comes from the King that he is to marry another. When his intended arrives, his breathe is taken away by her beauty. But he soon realizes that she will never fit in with his clan.

Cairren and Padraig go through with the wedding, but Padraig is not willing to give up the woman he loves. Cairren is fighting a losing battle with trying to fit in. Can either of these two find their HEA?

The release of the novel is timely, with everything going on right now. It shows that people have been discriminated against because of the color of their skin or for their religious beliefs though out time. Unfortunately, things have not changed that much...

I have mixed feelings about this book. While the writing was excellent, I just didn't like Padraig throughout most of the story, so when he finally redeemed himself, it was a little too late for me. Cairren spends most of her time fighting the prejudiced again her because of the color of her skin. This even comes from Padraig's family. There are times that he stands up for her, but I just didn't feel like he did enough, until the end.

While I didn't particularly care for Padraig, I adored Cairren!! She had put up with so much during her life and she used the anger that came from it to make her stronger. I just wish that Barclay had paired her with a stronger man...
