Defying the Earl by Anabelle Bryant

Defying the Earl by Anabelle Bryant

This is book 1 in the Regency Charms series.

Wilhelmina "Whimsy" Montgomery must find a way to support her aunt, sister and herself after the death of her parents. Trying her hand at matching making, she gets her first paying job that appears to be a piece of cake. The couple is very close to getting engaged anyway, she she just needs to make sure they stay on that path. She hadn't counted on Valerian St. David.

Valerian, the Earl of Dashwood, hardly has enough money to feed himself, let alone pay his staff and support his properties.  His brother is full of ridiculous ideas on how to make money, but his latest scheme might just work. Valerian is going to act as a match breaker. He is quickly hired to break up his first couple, which just happens to be the couple that Whimsy is trying to keep together.

What happens when these two cross paths with different purposes? Sparks fly for sure!

LOVED this story. I always love a story where the H/H banter with each other throughout the story and this story had plenty of that. Bryant hits it out of the ballpark again!! I can't wait for the next book in the series!

Dearest Rogue by Elizabeth Hoyt

Dearest Rogue by Elizabeth Hoyt

This is book 8 in the Maiden Lane series.

Nearly blind, Lady Phoebe Batten has a bodyguard with her at all times. Her over-protective brother, a powerful duke, hired Captain James Trevillion to be her escort whenever she left the house. Although injured while in service to the crown, James can shoot and ride with the best of them. His injury was never a problem until Phoebe was targeted by kidnappers.

Deciding that he could no longer handle being Phoebe's guard, James resigns his position. When a second attempt to kidnap Phoebe is successful, James knows he is the only one that can keep her safe. Once he has rescued her, James takes Phoebe to a place where no one will be able to locate them until the duke can find the culprit.

Having always been irritated by James trailing her at all time, Phoebe is surprised when she realizes that her feelings have changed. Will hiding in seclusion change the nature of their relationship?

LOVE, LOVE, LOVE this story!! I met Phoebe and James when I read Darling Beast (which was the first book in the series that I read - unfortunately I haven't found time to go back and read the others). I had a feeling that Hoyt would pair the two of them together and blessedly I was not disappointed!!

When the two of them are together, sparks just fly!! The bantering between the two of them is a joy to watch. I'm hoping to see more of them in the upcoming book that is set to release in November.

Deception of a Highlander by Madeline Martin

Deception of a Highlander by Madeline Martin

To be able to survive, Mariel Brandon became a spy. She has been able to do her job up to this point without having to kill anyone. But that might change with her latest assignment.  If she doesn't get the information she is assigned to get, she is suppose to kill her target. As an added inducement to get the assignment done, Mariel's boss has taken her little brother captive. If she doesn't complete the assignment, he will be killed.

Kieran MacDonald is Mariel's target. He is a man that doesn't let others close to him or his family. Heading back to his home, is is approached by Mariel to be allowed to travel with him. Believing her sob story, he allows her to join his party. Keiran soon learns that there is a spy sent after him. What will he do when he learns it is the lady he is starting to fall in love with?

Madeline Martin's debut novel indicates that there are great things to come! I thoroughly enjoyed the story of Mariel and Keirnan. You don't often read about female spies during this period of history and I really enjoy reading about them when I come across them.

The story was very fast paced and kept me enthralled until the very end.If this is any indication of what is to come from Madeline Martin, she will be on my auto buy list!

The Lady Hellion by Joanna Shupe

The Lady Hellion by Joanna Shupe

This is book 3 in the Wicked Deceptions series.

Trying to fight for the rights of the poor, Lady Sophia Barnes, has gotten herself challenged to a duel. Not knowing how to fire a gun, she must find someone to teach her. The only person who she dares to ask is Damien "Quint" Beecham, Viscount Quint. The man that broke her heart years ago.

Battling his own demons, Quint doesn't want this intrusion into his life. Especially from the woman he has not stopped wanting. But knowing that Sophia will continue on with or without his help, he reluctantly agrees to help her learn to shoot as well as help her with her cause.

Can these two former sweethearts find the love that each of them are craving?

I loved this story just as much as the other two in the series! Sophia is not your typical society miss and Quint is definitely not your typical lord. They two of them complimented each other very well.

With the added mystery of who is murdering the prostitutes and Quint's condition, the story had me on the edge of my seat throughout! This is definitely one of those stories that you read in one sitting because you just can't put it down.

I can't wait to see what Shupe has in store for us next!

Romancing the Earl by Darcy Burke

Romancing the Earl by Darcy Burke

This is book 2 in the Regency Treasure Hunters series

Never wanting to be an Earl, Major Elijah Hollister is just trying to get his life and estate together after the death of his brother. When Miss Catriona Bowen shows up at his door looking for a treasure map, he starts to believe that his brother's death was no accident. Now on the hunt for answers, he plans on keeping Catriona close to see what she might know.

Catriona is trying to make a name for herself by finding one of Britain's greatest treasures, but she needs Eliah's help to do so. Can she convince him that helping her will also help him find his brother's murderer?

I fell in love with Burke's writing when I read The DeValery Code. This story starts the next generation of that family. Catriona is the daughter of the previous H/H. Just like the previous story there is lots of adventure to keep the reader enthralled with the story.

I loved Catriona! She was a woman that was determined to do what she wanted and wasn't going to allow anyone to stop her.  She wanted to make a name for herself in a profession, that was at that time, for men-only. She needed a man that would allow her to be herself, but was strong enough not to let her run all over him.  Elijah was the perfect match!

I really hope that Burke is continuing with this series, as it is one of my favorites!

A Kiss for Lady Mary by Ella Quinn

A Kiss for Lady Mary by Ella Quinn

This is book 7 in the Marriage Game series.

Lady Mary Tolliver has been hounded by her cousin ever since her parents had passed away. Knowing that he was only after her money, she is determined to stay out of his parson's trap. Having been nearly caught once again, Mary gives into her family's scheme to keep her save.  She doesn't know if she can pull of being mistress of an estate where everyone thinks she is married to the owner.

When Christopher "Kit" Featherton finds out that someone is impersonating a wife he doesn't have, he is determined to set the woman in her place. Finding the one woman who he has ever contemplated marrying in his home, he decides to see how things progress.

Can't they convince everyone that they really are married? What happens when Kit decides that he wants a marriage in truth?

Those of you that have read my other reviews of books by Ella Quinn, know that I have a love/hate relationship with her writing. I generally enjoy the stories, but something about her writing just turns me off. I didn't get that with this book. I got a little frustrated with the characters at times (seriously, just kiss each other!!!), but that happens with most love stories you read.

I did thoroughly love the two matchmakers in this story!! I love that they concocted this idea to bring their two family members together. I also felt like I got a 3 for 1 with this story as there were two side romances along the way.

I look forward to Quinn's next book in the series, which comes out in July.

A Good Rogue is Hard to Find by Kelly Bowen

A Good Rogue is Hard to Find by Kelly Bowen

This is book 2 in the Lords of Worth series.

William Somerhill, the Duke of Worth, has not being paying the attention to his mother that he should. But all that is about to change. The Dowager Duchess has been carrying around chickens and doing other eccentric things and William is determined to keep his mother from ruin. He didn't count on his mother's companion running his astray.

Miss Jenna Hughes is more than just a companion to the Dowager Duchess, she runs her stables and is in charge of getting the funds for their secret endeavor. When William decides move in with his mother, the ladies plans might just be ruined. How can she hide their secret agenda?

This has got to be one of the funniest books I have read lately! The Dowager is hilarious and had me laughing out loud at her outrageous comments and actions. I predict that Bowen will become one of my all time favorite writers!

Having read book one in the series right before starting this one, I knew the antics that the Dowager was involved in. I had hoped that there was more to her son, than what little we had seen in that story.  Bowen did not disappoint!!  The interactions between Jenna and William were some of my favorite. With Jenna trying to hide what she was really doing and William trying to fight his attraction for his mother's companion, the story kept me enthralled!

This is definitely on the top of my list for favorite books of all time. I can't wait to see what this new author has in store for us next!!

A Scoundrel by Moonlight by Anna Campbell

A Scoundrel by Moonlight by Anna Campbell

This is book 4 in the Sons of Sin series.

Nell Trim's stepsister was used and then abandoned by the Marquess of Leath and she is determined to make him pay for her death. Seeking a journal with the evidence of his crimes, she infiltrates his household as a servant. Soon moving up to the position of companion for his mother, she is in a place to search the house for the evidence.

Having been asked to leaving London and the political scene after the shocking truth is revealed about his uncle, James Fairbrother is determined to wait out his time in peace and quiet at his country estate. He didn't count on the enticing Nell to distract him from his work.  Something about Nell, just doesn't sit right with him and he is determined to figure it out.

What happens when the truth is revealed? Is James the wicked man that Nell thinks he is?

LOVED this story! Having read about James in the other stories in the series, I knew the Campbell would make his story a great one. I was not disappointed.
I like when one of the H/H of the story is not of the upper echelon. I think it allows more freedom for the author and makes for a more interesting story.

Definitely one not to miss.

The Unlikely Lady by Valerie Bowman

The Unlikely Lady by Valerie Bowman

This is book 3 in the Playful Brides series.

Determined never to marry, Miss Jane Lowndes, does everything in her power to keep her parents at bay including a fictitious chaperone. Attending the wedding party masquerade of dear friends, Jane finds herself kissing an unknown male which turns out to be her verbal sparring partner Lord Garrett Upton.

Garrett is just as determined as Jane to never marry, but when he finds he can't forget the kiss he had with her, it turns his world upside down. Can the people least likely to make a pair find the everlasting love that neither of them thought they wanted?

I have wanted this pairing since the beginning of the series. I knew that under all that bickering, Bowman would find their love story. She did not disappoint!!

I loved that she kept the nature of their relationship the same. The bickering between the couple is my favorite part of them. It is not malicious and is done in a playful manner. You do see the shift in how those conversations go when they realize that they have feeling for the other, but they are just as entertaining.

This is one of my all time favorite series and I can't wait to see what Bowman has in store for us next!

No Gentleman for Georgina by Jess Michaels

No Gentleman for Georgina by Jess Michaels

This is book 4 in the Notorious Flynns series.

Georgina Hickson has spent her life doing what her family wants in order to secure a titled husband. When she meets Paul Abbot at a friend's gathering, she sees something that she wants for herself. But knowing that nothing can come of it, she settles for occasionally talking to him at parties.

Paul has been in love with Georgina since he laid eyes on her. When she offers him the opportunity to spend more time with her, he jumps at the chance. Taking Georgina to the wax museum, offers them a chance to get to know each other that polite conversation in a crowded ballroom would never allow.

What happens when they finally are able to spend time alone without the prying eyes of the ton.

Having gotten to know Paul while reading The Scoundrel's Lover, I was excited to read his story.  Michaels did not disappoint. I would definitely recommend reading the other books in the series before reading this one as you get insight into the characters that you really can't get with a novella because of its length (this one is pretty short, too).

If you are looking for a quick, sensual read, this is the book for you!

I can't wait for the next book in the series, A Marquis for Mary, which comes out in June.

Wolf Bride by Elizabeth Moss

Wolf Bride by Elizabeth Moss

This is book 1 in the Lust in Tutor Court series.

Eloise Tyrell, lady-in-waiting to Queen Boleyn, has just been told that her father has found a husband for her. Marrying a stranger was not what she had in mind for herself, especially after watching the events unfolding at the castle.

Lord Wolf has been intrigued with Eloise since he saw her riding across the moors.  There marriage gets off to a rocky start and doesn't get any better when Eloise is called to testify at the Queen's trial.

Can these two strangers make a go of their marriage or will all the intrigue at court keep them apart?

I don't usually like romance stories that revolve too much around real life events (King Henry VIII trying to "get rid" of Anne Boleyn) but I did enjoy this one. It could be because I actually knew quite a bit about the time period already as I teach these events to my students.

We see two strangers coming together as husband and wife. They start to build their relationship at their estate and are then quickly thrown into the intrigue at court. That definitely adds another element to the story.

This is my first book by Moss and I will definitely be back for more.

Kilts and Daggers by Victoria Roberts

Kilts and Daggers by Victoria Roberts

This is book 2 in the Highland Spies series.

Lady Grace Walsingham can't believe that her sister has decided to spend the rest of her life in Scotland. Having traveled there to see her sister wed, Grace can't wait to get back to England and her betrothed. She didn't count on falling for her own barbaric Scot.

Fagan has orders from his liege to take Grace back to England after her visit. All they ever seem to do is trade barbs back and forth. When all that hatred suddenly turns to passion, what will these two former foes do?

While reading My Highland Spy, I figured that Roberts would pair Grace and Fagan up.  Even then, the chemistry between the pair just leapt off the page. She did not disappoint.

I loved the verbal sparring between Grace and Fagan. It had me laughing out loud at times. Roberts had just the right amount of romance, intrigue and adventure to make this the perfect story.

I can't wait to read the next book in the series!!

Twice a Texas Bride by Linda Broday

Twice a Texas Bride by Linda Broday

This is book 2 in the Bachelors of Battle Creek series.

Callie Quinn is running for her life. Hot on her trail is her nephew's father. Having promised her sister to take care of her son, Callie makes her way back to her childhood home in hopes of finding the means to disappear.

Finding a young woman and boy in his barn, Rand Sinclair opens his home to the pair. Needing a housekeeper, Rand offers them a place to stay in exchange of her services. Having decided never to marry, Rand is dismayed to find himself falling for Callie.

Callie can't risk getting close to Rand when her and her nephews lives are in danger. But is she willing to give up what could be a once in a lifetime love?

I was excited to return to Battle Creek and learn more about the "brothers". I think the bond between them is actually stronger than blood brothers because they chose to be brothers to each other. That shows in the relationship that Broday has developed in the stories.

Having been left alone at a young age, Rand developed a shell around himself and didn't let anyone in except his "brothers". When he learns that his mother is alive (Texas Mail Order Bride), I think that he ends up retreating even further into that shell in hopes of not getting hurt again.  Upon meeting Callie, he is immediately attracted to her. Knowing his decision about marriage, he doesn't want to give her false hope. He lays his cards on the table and hopes that she accepts what he has to offer.

Callie has had nothing but hardship from the men in her life and doesn't think Rand will be any better. With nowhere else to turn, she takes him up on his offer of a place to stay. She slowly begins to trust him and feelings other than gratitude emerge.

I loved watching these two overcome their past hurts and grow together as a couple. I can't wait to read the last book in the series, although I'll be sad that it is over...

50 Ways to Ruin a Rake by Jade Lee

50 Ways to Ruin a Rake by Jade Lee

This is book 1 in the Not Quite Ladies series.

Trevor Anaedsley is out of money and his grandfather has cut off his funds until he does the right thing and gets engaged.  While trying to duck his creditors, he visits his old tutor.  While re-acquainting himself with his tutor's daughter, Mellie, he comes up with a plan. Mellie will become his fake fiancee.

When Trevor tells her about his plan, Mellie doesn't know what to think. But she does want to go to London to meet someone so she doesn't have to marry her cousin.  As much as she thinks the plan will never work, it might be her only chance at getting married.

What happens when two people find that they don't hate each other as much as they thought they did?

Whenever I pick up a book by Jade Lee, I know I won't be disappointed. Her writing draws me into a book and won't let me put it down until the very last page.  50 Ways to Ruin a Rake is no exception. Full of witty banter and steamy love scenes, Lee will keep you entranced until the very end.

The Harlot Countess by Joanna Shupe

The Harlot Countess by Joanna Shupe

This is book 2 in the Wicked Deceptions series.

Having been ruined in the eyes of society during her debut, Maggie was quickly married off to the Lord Hawkins. Several years have passed and Maggie once again emerges into society but plays the part of the "Harlot Countess". What others don't know, is that she is the renown artist know as Lemarc who takes pleasure in ridiculing Simon Barrett, the Earl of Winchester for his part in her heart break.

Simon is determined to find out who the artist know as Lemarc is. He is tired of being ridiculed by the man. He is desperate enough to go to his former love and get her expert opinion on the subject. Having his heart broken by Maggie once was hard enough, but can he allow his heart to suffer it again?

What will Simon do when he finds out that the person he is hunting is none other than his former love?

I really enjoyed this story! It is nice to get away from the "prim and proper" debutants that are normally in a historical romance. With Maggie, we get a girl who did the right thing and she was taken advantage of. She then decides to take her life into her own hands and do as she pleases. She isn't out to make anyone happy but herself.

Of course, I would have loved to have seen Simon believe in his love for Maggie when they were younger and stick by her, but then there wouldn't be a story. I did like that he seemed to have been pining for her all this time, serves him right for turning his back on her! But Shupe did a wonderful job of bring him back into my good graces.

I can't wait for the next book in the series, which comes out at the end of May.
