A Duke's Wicked Kiss by Kathleen Bittner Roth

A Duke's Wicked Kiss by Kathleen Bittner Roth.

Miss Suri Thurston and her half sister, Marguerite, are caught talking about kissing by Lord John Fairfax. He decides to teach them what kisses should and should not be allowed by proper young ladies.  He delivers a quick peck to Marguerite but with Suri, he delivers a kiss that neither will soon forget.

Ten years later John, now the Duke of Ravenswood, encounters Suri in India.  He is there on a mission for the Crown and she is there to visit her sister and to finally meet her other family. They soon find that their attraction to each other has not dimmed in their ten years apart.
What happens when their missions collide? Will their love survive?

This is the second book I've read by Roth and I definitely want to read more!  Both of her novels had OMG moments that kept you wanting more. I couldn't put the book down because I had to find out what happened next.

The physical attraction between the H/H was off the charts and the author did a wonderful job of building up the tension between them. I think it always adds to the excitement of the romance when there is an added amount of mystery to the story. In this case we had several plot lines that popped up.  It definitely keeps the reader on their toes.

Rarely do you see a historical romance that features a heroine that is not of European descent (in this case she was 1/2 European and 1/2 Indian). It was nice to get out and away from the ton and see other things that were happening in the world during this period of time.

If you are looking for something to read that is not your typical historical romance, this is the book for you!! It had all the things that you love about the genre, but without the typical setting and or events.
I was disappointed to read on the author's webpage that this was a stand alone title. I'm really hoping that she changes her mind and gives us the story of several of the secondary characters!!

Vexing the Viscount by Christie Kelley

Vexing the Viscount by Christie Kelley.

This is book 3 in the Wise Woman series.

Viscount Middleton, Braden Tavers, must set out to London in search of his estate's healer and his brother. His healer, Tia Featherstone, went to London in search for his brother to make sure that we all was well with him.

Braden tracks down Tia and brings her back to his home. He lets her know that he will be sending her home to the estate, but Mia is determined to stay and find the Viscount's brother. Meeting a new friend, Mia moves in with her and away from the Viscount's watchful eye.

A month passes and Braden finds Mia at a ball. Making a spectacle of both of them, Braden carries Mia out and the ball to his awaiting carriage.  They soon agree to work together to find Braden's brother, but as they spend more and more time together they can't seem to fight the attraction they feel for each other.

Can the Viscount make an honorable proposition to his estate's healer and if not, can Mia accept only that?

I did enjoy this story and found it written better than Enticing the Earl. I always enjoy a good mystery with my romance stories and Kelley didn't disappoint. The mystery was one I hadn't read before and thoroughly enjoyed it.

I enjoyed seeing the characters from the previous stories and catching up with them.

Thank you for having me today!
Where do you get your inspiration for your characters and your plot?

A variety of places—movies, television shows, real people (I’ll never say who!). I tend to think of characters first, but the Regency Treasure Hunters series is also very plot-centered because of the treasure hunts. Plots ideas come from movies and television shows and are pretty much what I enjoy reading.
Do you write outlines before you begin or just start writing and let the story evolve....do you know the ending before it is written?

Um . . . sometimes. I’ve written in so many different ways. Some work better than others. What I can say is that I’ve rarely written two books in the same way. I do like to plot out turning points and the ending black moment in advance, but sometimes they change as the characters arc maybe goes a little off what I’d planned. For this series, there’s an overall arc and I know the ending. ☺
Favorite place to write?

This also varies, strangely enough. Today I’m writing in a coffee shop by necessity while my kids are in a theatre camp. I like to write on my couch, on the outdoor couch my husband just built, and also in my bed!
What is your favorite pen to write with?

Ball point blue.
How do you choose names for characters?

This is probably one of the things I enjoy most as a writer—strange, but true! I have baby name books, a character-naming book by Sherrilyn Kenyon that’s super helpful, and some websites that I visit regularly. I have a really bad habit of choosing names that are too similar (see Saxton and Sevrin in Secrets and Scandals – wow, that’s a whole lot of S sounds all around!). I just realized last week that two of the four heroes in Regency Treasure Hunters had first names that started with the same letter. I ended up changing the name of the hero for book two even though I chose his first because naming the hero for book four was really, really difficult and since I’m pretty happy with the one I ended up with, I decided I couldn’t change it.
When do you write?
Every possible moment! I try to have a schedule since I have school-aged kids, which means I do most of my writing during the hours they’re at school. In the summer, it’s a little more fluid, but I actually prefer the summer schedule because there’s no homework to deal with!
Do you treat it like a job and keep writing work hours or are you moved to write in a less structured way?

It’s definitely my job, so I aim for a work schedule. However, as a writer it’s really hard to turn your brain off for writing-purposes and your Internet self off for promotional and networking purposes. I feel like I’m just now starting to tell myself it’s okay to take a day off.
How do you research settings to make them believable?

I’ve been to several of the places I write about, so that’s helpful. If I haven’t been there, I scour the Internet for descriptions and images. This can be difficult when writing a historical. I want to know what the inside of a church looked like in 1794 . . . and that can be tough!

The de Valery Code by Darcy Burke

Miss Margery Derrington and her aunt are in dire need of money. When Margery finds an old manuscript in the attic, they think that it will be the answer to their prayers.  She is off to see the Rhys Bowen, a known scholar, to see if he is willing to purchase it.

Rhys can't believe that the de Valery manuscript is finally in his hands, but it doesn't do any good without the companion book which his cousin has.  Seeing that the manuscript has more value to it than she originally thought, Margery is not quite ready to sell it yet. She conveniences Rhys to take her to the other book to determine what they can find out about a supposed treasure.

When they arrive to check out the second book, they soon learn that it has been stolen.  With the help of an unlikely source, they learn where a copy of it is.

Unfortunately, they soon learn that they are not the only people hunting down the treasure and find themselves in some dangerous situations.  What will the couple do? Margery needs the book so that she and her aunts can survive, but Rhys wants to solidify his position as a leading antiquarian. Can they both get what they want and want they didn't know they wished for?

A Traitorous Heart by Tammy Jo Burns + Giveaway

A Traitorous Heart by Tammy Jo Burns.

The is book 1 in the Reluctant Lords series.

One her way home, Tessa is grabbed by her friend Danny and told to run. She has no idea why they are running but knows it can't be anything good. Finding herself being chased by soldiers and on the run for her life, she is suddenly knocked unconscious.

Derek Simmons, the Earl of Blackburn, is called to interrogate a woman thought to be a spy. He is surprised to find that the prisoner is his wife, whom he had been mourning for the last six months. Having been told that she was one of the many killed in one of the first battle surges by Le Grande Armée, he never even told his family of his brief marriage.

Tessa wakes only to find she has no memory of who she is.  Derek knows in his heart that his wife is no traitor, but can he prove it to his superiors?  Not wanting his wife in prison, Derek insists that Tessa be allowed to be taken to his home.

He is given two weeks to prove her innocence, but how can he do that when she can't remember if she is a spy or not?

I really enjoyed this story. It was different from your traditional historical romances in that it involved a married couple (of course, Tessa didn't know they were married).  You still get to see the romance, as Tessa "re-lives" her getting to know her husband period of her life.

I always like when a mystery is added to my romance novels, it just adds that something extra to my enjoyment of the story.  In this particular instance, you have the mystery of Tessa and if or when she will gain her memory back as well as who the traitor really is.

I really liked the secondary characters in the story, particularly Mikala and Gabriel. I'm happy to see their story is the next in the series (yeah, it's already out!!), and I can't wait to read it.

Enticing Miss Eugenie Villaret by Ella Quinn

Enticing Miss Eugenie Villaret by Ella Quinn.

This is book 5 in the Marriage Game series.

William, Viscount Wivenly, flees the marriage minded mamas in London only to find himself entangled in other problems when he reaches the West Indies. Having come to the Indies to ascertain the truth regarding his late uncle's business, William finds himself entranced by a "widow" he has a chance encounter with.

William soon learns that the woman he was attracted to is the step daughter of his late uncle and she wants nothing to do with him.  Miss Eugenie Villaret wants to marry for love and she sure is not going to be some plaything for the visiting viscount.

What will happen when William and Eugenie find that they have to be married? Will Eugenie go through with it even when she won't have the marriage she has always dreamed of?

I liked this story. It's nice to read a story in this time period that doesn't occur in London.  Having been to the islands, I loved reading a story set there.

I've kinda had a love-hate relationship with this author. I've loved the story lines, but not so much the writing.  I think this is one of her better books.  I did think that the secondary romancing couple was a bit far fetched (fell in love way too quickly!), but I really did enjoy the story.

It was nice to see the other H/H and catch up with their lives.

What will happen when they find that their attraction to each other is just as strong as ever?

This was a nice short story. Davidson did a good job of getting me invested in the story in such a short amount of time. The story moved along at a quick pace and had me on my toes guess as to what would come next.

I'll definitely be picking up future books by Nicola Davidson.

Interview with Elise de Sallier

I'm happy to have Elise de Sallier join us on the blog today.  I asked some of my teacher friends (thanks, ladies!!) what questions they would ask an author if they could. Elise was kind enough to answer those questions for us.

Elise has published 3 books. Her latest of which, Passion & Propriety, just came out on August 7.

Where do you get your inspiration for your characters and your plot?

All over the place, but the idea for Passion and Propriety came to me after watching multiple viewings of Disney's Beauty and the Beast with my gorgeous granddaughter. I started thinking how much fun it would be to write a Beauty and the Beast inspired Regency romance. When I began planning the story, I found myself asking, how do we define beauty, what makes someone beastly, and how on earth would I tackle a 'realistic' story involving a curse? It certainly made for some interesting research!

Do you write outlines before you begin or just start writing and let the story evolve....do you know the ending before it is written?

Yes, I do write an outline, but I don't always stick to it! I started writing as a form of stress relief from my job as a counsellor and family therapist, so in stark contrast to real life, I wanted my stories to show the characters learning from their mistakes, growing as individuals and in their love for one another, overcoming whatever obstacles are thrown in their way, and ending with a very satisfying and happy ending. I'm now writing full time, but I still feel the same about my stories...the ones I read as well as the ones I write. I can cope with a fair amount of realism and angst in my fiction, as long as I have my HEA!

Favorite place to write?

My dining table if there aren't too many distractions, or my office overlooking the garden when there is. :)

What is your favorite pen to write with?

I write everything on my trusty little HP notebook computer. It's slow as a wet weak and is on it's last legs, but I can't bring myself to part with it.

How do you choose names for characters?

My key characters names are usually found after spending hours searching online at sites that list names used in the Regency era, both first and surnames. Other times, as long as they're not too unique, I use the names of old school friends or teachers for my secondary characters.

When do you write?

Mornings are best when my mind is freshest, but I try to keep working afternoons and evenings on edits for my publisher or marketing.

Do you treat it like a job and keep writing work hours or are you moved to write in a less structured way?

I try, but life has a way of getting in the way. :)

How do you research settings to make them believable?

Some of my 'knowledge' is drawn from the hundreds of historical romances I've read over the years, some from Austen and writers of the era, some from watching wonderful shows like the BBC version of Pride and Prejudice, a lot from hours spent exploring the amazing historical blogs and sites available on the Internet, and the rest from Wikipedia, my new best friend.

Thanks, Elise for stopping by!!!

Passion and Propriety by Elise de Sallier

Passion and Propriety by Elise Sallier.

This is book 1 in the Hearts of Honour series.

Finding her childhood friend almost dead in the local cemetery, Hannah Foster decides it is her job to nurse the wounded Viscount Blackthorn back to health.  Being a confirmed spinster, Hannah doesn't see anything wrong with her staying at his home with the elderly servants.

Coming home to die, William is surprised to find himself still alive with an angel tending his wounds. Determined to end the curse that has plagued his family for generations, he fights his growing attraction for Hannah.

When they must marry to satisfy society's dictates, they decide not to consummate their marriage. Will their marriage survive without the intimacies that would bring them closer to each other?

I really enjoyed this story, the first that I have read by this author.  The heroes of romance novels are not often physically wounded and that was a nice change of pace (not that I have anything against a perfectly formed male body, LOL!)

I really liked Hannah, probably because she was a little bit bossy. She was use to running her father's household, so when she is nursing the Viscount the "woman in charge" just kinda kicked in. I loved that the author had the H/H both be virgins and that William  got tips from his father's book collection (how else is a guy to know, LOL!)

I'll definitely be picking up more books by this author and can't wait for the next installment of this series which stars  Hannah's friend, Grace.

You can find this book at Amazon, Barnes & Noble, Kobo, and TWCS Publishing House.

A Woman Made for Sin by Michele Sinclair

A Woman Made for Sin by Michele Sinclair.

This is book 2 in the A Woman Made For series.

Lady Aimee Wentworth has been in love with Reece Hamilton since she was a little girl. Ever since their kiss, he won't stay in England long enough to see her. In desperation, Aimee comes up with a plan to go to him and ends up getting herself kidnapped - luckily be members of Reece's crew.

Reece knows that he can never provide for Aimee that way she should be provided for, so he decided to stay away from her. Knowing that if he saw her, all his reservations wouldn't mean anything and he wouldn't do that to the woman he loved.

What will Reece do when he finds Aimee on his ship having made friends with his entire crew? Is it the answers to his prayers?

This is definitely a different type of romance book. Not in the way the storyline of the H/H goes, but that it's definitely a continuation of the previous book.  Millie and Chase from the previous book (A Woman Made for Pleasure) feature heavily in this story.  It was kinda of a dream come true. When you read a series, the other H/H usually pop up so that you can see how their life has progressed but you never really get to see much of their life after the end of their story.  This story started just months after the previous one ended, so it definitely felt like a mini-series that had just continued on to the next night. Having said that, I do wish the author had done a little less of Millie and Chase and beefed up the story for Aimee and Reece but I did really enjoy both parts of the story.

I really enjoyed Aimee and Reece. Now that Aimee is after her true love, we see a fierce side of her that was hidden when she was around Millie. I liked seeing Aimee go after what she wanted.

I loved the vulnerability in Reece. His whole crew knew there was someone that held the heart of their captain, but were wise enough not to pry into it.  When they found out that Aimee was "The One", it was fun to see how they gravitated to her and made all of Reece's reasons for not marrying Aimee mute.

I am excited to read the next book in the series, which is about Jenelle.

Passion and Propriety

Hearts of Honour- Book One

By

Elise de Sallier

Release Date: 7th August 2014

Genre: Regency Romance/ Historical

ISBN e-book: 978-1-61213-261-7

Available from: Amazon, Kobo, Barnes and Noble, and TWCS PH

Summary:

A hidden beauty . . . a wounded beast. Can the curse threatening their happiness be broken?

There is absolutely nothing improper about Hannah Foster, the vicar of Hartley’s eldest and least pretty daughter, nursing the badly wounded Viscount Blackthorn back to health—that’s if the returned officer can be saved. At twenty-seven, she is two years the man’s senior, a confirmed spinster, and far too sensible to develop feelings for her patient. The fact he was once her childhood friend, has grown into a fine specimen of a man—his terrible scars notwithstanding—and seems as lost and lonely as she sometimes feels has no bearing on the matter.

Even if the unthinkable were to happen and William was to see past her plain exterior and recognise the caring, intelligent, passionate woman beneath, he is determined to break the curse that has plagued his family for generations by letting his bloodline die out. Her best friend Grace’s warnings are moot; a man of Lord Blackthorn’s wealth and position would never be interested in a woman like Hannah . . . would he?

Author Bio:

A great believer in living happily ever after, Elise began her lifelong obsession with the romance and paranormal genres when she was far too young to be reading either. After more than thirty years of marriage to her very own romantic hero, she now knows great relationships don't just happen, they take work . . . which doesn't mean writing about them can't be a whole lot of fun!

While raising a family, Elise established a career as a counsellor and family therapist. Seeking an escape from the stresses of her work, she discovered the world of fan fiction, and her timid writer's muse made its voice heard. Two point three million hits, twenty thousand reviews, and an e-mail from an acquisitions editor at The Writer's Coffee Shop later, and her life found a new and fascinating direction.

Elise likes to see her characters grow, experience passion and adventure, tackle some difficult issues, and find lasting love . . . eventually.
